DR. TOM STRINDEN, MD

DR. TOM STRINDEN, MD

Dr. Strinden received his medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in 1988. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and has had an eye surgical practice in Fargo since 1995.

Dr. Strinden has performed over 40,000 major eye surgeries in 30 years of medical practice. He began performing LASIK in 1998 and offering multifocal implants in 1999. He has performed over 20,000 cataract surgeries and has implanted premium multifocal lenses in more than a thousand patients.

Dr. Strinden’s practice emphasis is refractive surgery and cataract surgery but he also offers a range of services related to general ophthalmology. He is an associate clinical professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and has volunteered on medical mission trips to India, Honduras, and Haiti.

He and his wife, Michelle, have four children and reside in Fargo. He is active in his church and enjoys outdoor activities with his kids such as hunting and fishing. He also serves on the FCA hockey National Board.

DR. MATTHEW WINKELS, MD

DR. MATTHEW WINKELS, MD

Dr. Winkels received his medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in 2019. He then completed his Ophthalmology residency training at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He recently moved back to the Fargo area upon completion of his training, and has been a surgeon at Bagan Strinden Vision since September of 2023.

Dr. Winkels’ practice emphasis is cataract/premium cataract and refractive surgery, but he also offers a range of services related to cornea, retina, glaucoma surgery and oculoplastic surgery.

He and his wife, Callie, reside in Fargo with their yellow lab named Howie. Dr. Winkels is an avid golfer, and enjoys most activities that allow him to be outdoors. He is honored and excited to have the opportunity to return to the state of North Dakota and care for its citizens.

DR. STEVE BAGAN, MD

DR. STEVE BAGAN, MD

Dr. Bagan received his M.D. degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX in 1976. He then completed his specialty training in Ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic. He has had an eye surgical practice in Fargo since 1980.

Dr. Bagan has done over 10,000 major eye surgeries and over 10,000 Lasik and PRK
laser procedures . He is also a cornea transplant surgeon, giving him valuable experience in all aspects of cornea surgery. Dr. Bagan has had refractive surgery himself. This unique perspective and his careful personal approach will provide you with an excellent refractive surgery experience.

He goes overseas to perform volunteer surgery, and has performed and taught eye surgery in the Philippines, Nigeria, India, Peru, Nicaragua, Ukraine, Romania and other countries.

DR. SARAH SWANHOLM, OD

DR. SARAH SWANHOLM, OD

Dr. Swanholm, originally from Fargo, ND, received her undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of North Dakota. She went on to obtain her doctorate degree, graduating with honors, from Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Oregon. While at Pacific University, she spent time as a teaching assistant, volunteered on a mission trip to El Salvador, and served as the Class of 2012 president.

She then completed a hospital-based/rehabilitative optometric residency at the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center, specializing in ocular disease and low vision.

Her professional areas of interest include primary eye care, ocular disease prevention and treatment, specialty contact lenses, and surgical co-management. She is a current member of the American Optometric Association and the North Dakota Optometric Association. She has served as a member of the Heartland Healthcare Network Ancillary Board as well as been a member of the United Way’s 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership program.

She and her husband, Chaz, live in Fargo with their two daughters. She enjoys running, golfing, and traveling, in her free time.

DR. ABBY SPERR, OD

DR. ABBY SPERR, OD

Dr. Sperr is a native of Hawley, MN and completed her undergraduate degree in Biology from Bemidji State University as a National Science Foundation STEM Scholar.  She went on to receive her doctorate degree from Chicago College of Optometry, Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL where she graduated with clinical honors. While at Chicago College of Optometry she served as student ambassador for Midwestern University, teaching assistant, participated in Grand Rounds presentations at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed research on current methods of dry eye treatment.

In addition to dry eye disease, Dr. Sperr’s areas of interest include lifelong comprehensive eye care, treatment of ocular disease, and surgical co-management. She spends time with local student health organizations educating about the optometry profession and is a member of the North Dakota Optometric Association.

Outside of the office Abby enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, cheering on Minnesota sports teams, and playing frisbee with her dog, Maggie.
